The 82nd Annual Academy Awards bestowed its highest honours to women this year with Monique, Sandra Bullock, and Kathryn Bigelow clenching Best Supporting Actress, Best Actress and Best Director respectively.
Monique’s win not a surprise at all. The host of her own talk show was a crowd favourite even from the beginning. ‘Precious’ which she won the Best Supporting award for also scored Best Adapted Screenplay.
She’s an avid supporter of gay and women’s rights as you can read from this interview with the Advocate. And likewise the gays love her back too, coz who wouldn’t love a big black sassy woman like her?
Sandra Bullock got emotional talking about “the mothers who take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from” obviously still channeling her inspirational role from the ‘The Blind Side’. But other than that she doesn’t really have a reason to shed a tear because now she has a shiny naked gold statue to go along with her Razzie, which incidentally makes her the first person to accept both awards on the same weekend.
But the best part about this year’s Oscars is not only did Kathryn Bigelow become the first woman to win Best Director, but also because she snubbed her ex-husband James Cameron in the Best Picture as well.
The New York Observer summed up that magic moment, rubbing it in the Avatar director’s face with this tweet:
“And…Jim Cameron sulks home to sleep on a great big pile of money. Good night, all. -TT”
Here’s the rest of the winners (and no, I was not disappointed that Colin Firth’s gay role didn’t win Best Actor. Jeff Bridges is awesome too!)
